Skiathos belongs to the complex of the Northern Sporades islands, such as the islands of Skopelos and Alonissos The island is 42 square kilometers and is located north of Evia and opposite the Pelion mountain. It is formed by a rising to 438 m, partly forested mountain range.
Skiathos is now part of Greek perfecture Magnesia and counts 5100 permanent inhabitants (2002), from which almost 90% live in the capital.
The island's airport is similar to Princess Juliana Airport and famous for its short runway and the low approach. Typical products of Skiathos are olives and wine. Skiathos has been mentioned frequently in the maritime operations of the Persian wars, Philip II of Macedon destroyed the city of Skiathos at 200 BC. The writer Alexandros Papadiamantis was born in 1851 on Skiathos. Among others, he wrote the book "The murderer", which is famous in Europe. The main street in Skiathos town is named after him.
